Movement 2015 – Recapitulat-ION

main

It’s been a few short weeks and my heart is still racing from Movement Detroit. Held in the Heart of Detroit’s downtown just along the Detroit River, Movement is easily one of the largest events to ever happen in this city. Tens of Thousands pour through the gates of Detroit’s Hart Plaza each of the three days of the festival… And at they end of the night – They all file out.

crowd

Since its inception in 2000, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF) has evolved into a masterpiece of international presence. Hosting over 100 DJs from around the world, the event – now titled Movement – boasts nearly 100k attendees over three days.

boats

Six major stages are positioned in Hart Plaza, three of which are sponsored by Thump, Beatport and Redbull respectively. The giant Movement Stage is positioned naturally within the plaza’s primary amphitheater and was home to acts like Art Department, Loco Dice, Dogblood, Richie Hawtin, Maceo Plex, and DJ Snoopadelic (yes, that’s Snoop Dogg). The Beatport stage was positioned just along the river and was home to Catz n Dogz, Soul Clap, Ataxia, Dubfire, Maya Jane Cole, and Nicole Maudober. My personal favorite stage was the Redbull Music Acadamy stage which was home to Method Man, Disclosure, Hudson Mowhawke, Danny Brown, People Under The Stairs, Jets, Ben UFO, Brodinkski and Squarepusher. Oh my gosh… This lineup was simply insane.

forgetwhosdj

Considering Detroit is known around the world as the birthplace of Techno, it’s only right that Thump Magazine (the music channel for Vice Mag) would sponsor the “Made In Detroit” Stage. Each day this stage held space for day long showcases. The Ghostly International Showcase which closed with Matthew Dear was easily one of the highlights of the festival. On the final Day, my mind was blown as the festival drew to a close and I found myself in the presence of Kevin Saunderson & Derrick May performing “Hi-Tech Soul”. Two live production audio engineers with the addition of a live percussionist reminded me of the true essence of music. It was enormous to see live drums played along side an electronic performance of this magnitude.

matthewbear

Beyond the Festival itself, the entire city seemed to open its doors to host after parties, mimosa brunch events and other extracurriculars. We found our way to into the TV Lounge for Soul Clap, City Club for Maceo Plex and Skream, and of course the infamous Old Miami for Seth Troxler’s Need I Say More IX day party. Wow… I don’t think anyone slept all weekend.

mainstage

All around, Movement proved to be far beyond the scope of imagination. I will surely be headed back next year for another round of high potency shenanigans. Thanks for the Motor City…

Homegrown Northwest Reggae Festival // July 25-26 in Carnation, WA

Homegrown NW Reggae Festival, Ganjaology

NW reggae lovers rejoice… the Homegrown Northwest Reggae Festival is just around the corner and the lineup is looking hot! The event focuses on reggae acts local to the Pacific North West, while featuring a handful of acts from beyond our cozy coastal zone. If you’re looking for a respite from the city this upcoming weekend, hit the 90 east and you’ll be at Cook’s Farm in Carnation, WA within the hour!

The HomeGrown NW Reggae Fest was founded by two local musicians, Mike Yarosz and Bill Ulsund with a mission to provide a musician-oriented festival lineup focused on the true ensemble nature of reggae music. The theme of the event is “The best local reggae music the Northwest has to offer…” so if you know your locals, you can expect a deep rooted family vibe with this two-day festival. Many of the bands perform locally at Seattle’s hottest spots for reggae music including Nectar Lounge, Barboza, Neumo’s, and The Crocodile. Noteworthy NW locals include Indubious, The Highlife Band, YogoMan Burning Band, The Approach, Two Story Zori, Positive Rising, The Mystic Arrows, Wet City Rockers, The Hooky’s, Positive Rising, Tribal Order and many more!

Headlining the event are Josh Heinrichs & Skillinjah, from Springfield, Missouri.  The lead vocals of Josh are sung in a forceful falsetto over guitar-centered melodies.  His album mate and co-songwriter Skillinjah performs in a dancehall toaster style, with rapid-fire lyrics that weave drama, humor and hi jinx in with style.  Also from outside the Northwest are headliners New Kingston, a true family band from Brooklyn, New York by way of Jamaica.  Three brothers perform contemporary reggae infused with hip-hop and R&B with their father, world-renowned reggae bassist Courtney Panton.

With 20 stellar bands, two stages and two full days of live reggae music, the Northwest Homegrown Reggae Festival is sure to please. So grab your spliffies, coolers and camping gear and head to Carnation this coming Friday. And if you need a head start, be sure to catch The Original Wailers at Nectar Lounge Thursday July 24th. Large up the NW community!

Visionary Art with Alex and Allyson Grey – Elements of Bass Recap

Ganjaology, Bassdrop, Elements of Bass, Alex Grey

We recently had the pleasure of participating in an extra-ordinary event here in Seattle in which the music and art communities came together to give thanks to the elements.

Hosted by Seattle bass music collective Bassdrop Music as their four year anniversary party, the event  featured music from some of the hottest West Coast producers, plus some of the city’s freshest local acts. To top things off, world famous visionary artists Alex and Allyson Grey participated by doing live painting during the event. Naturally this enlivening event was entitled Elements of Bass.

Many find that the four common elements Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water are the basic elements of the universe. We are here to contend that in this time we are moving beyond this knowledge of the elementals in this basic sense. We are living in a time of expansion, connectivity and collaboration. For this reason we redefine the elements of creation as music, art, dance and healing. The folks over at Bassdrop did a great job of bringing these aspects together into an inspiring event with EOB.

Ganjaology, Bassdrop, Elements of Bass, Alex Grey

For those that don’t know, Alex Grey has become famous for his ability to diagram energy flows in the human body. His attention to detail is unrivaled by any living artist of his ilk. To spice up the evening, our good friends at Bassdrop Music coordinated a discussion with the Greys, so that we young creators could get a glimpse into the minds of these visionaries.

Ganjaology, Bassdrop, Elements of Bass, Alex Grey

During the discussion, Alex and Allyson shared their views on contemporary art, music, and culture and how it relates to the historical perspective. The theme of the presentation was centered on consciousness and how music, art and other forms of creative expression can color the human experience.

Ganjaology, Bassdrop, Elements of Bass, Alex Grey

A strong through line which permeated the talk, was the idea of sacrament and how certain substances can bring us into a more clear space of awareness, both individually and as a collective.

From the ancient art of consuming Soma, psychedelic mushrooms or even that famed flora known to grow on grave of King Solomon – we humans have been creating, cultivating, and consuming sacraments of various form and texture throughout time. Like the infamous talks given by the late great Terrence McKenna, the Greys stressed the importance of knowing and using these plants and other substances to the benefit of consciousness, while warning of the dangers of misuse. Many of the slides displayed shared imagery of art old and new which had quite obviously been influenced by the use of psychedelics. A personal favorite is the image of the little mushroom men carrying smaller mushrooms and feeding them to one another. Alex states, “Ok, this one is quite clear… Someone was high!”

Ganjaology, Bassdrop, Elements of Bass, Alex Grey

The Greys shared their view on the legalization of cannabis in the NW calling what’s happening in Washington and Colorado a benchmark. It is quite clear that like the team here at Ganjaology, Alex and Allyson value cannabis for its many beneficial properties beyond the commonly recognized lofty high that comes with smoking it. Whether it’s used to reduce pain, stop nausea, settle the mind or expand conscious awareness, one thing is clear…

The use of cannabis in appropriate dosage promotes CREATIVITY, POSITIVITY and the creation and enjoyment of BASS MUSIC!

_MG_9945

We want to extend a big thanks to Alex and Allyson for sharing their knowledge and participating in the event both as speakers and live painters. Further we want to give thanks to Bassdrop Music for organizing the event along with all of the others that had a hand in bringing us together. Big up all the musicians that performed including Mat The Alien, Christian Martin, Bluetech, David Starfire, BizZara, Selecta Element and Triple CrownSean Majors, Kozmo, and all the others. Lastly we can’t leave out the local artists that participated including Burgandy Viscosi, Damon Conklin, Sarah Jorgenson, The Graffiti Defense Coalition and more!

Ganjaology, Bassdrop, Elements of Bass, Alex Grey

Like Allyson’s secret script, no amount of language could begin to decipher the excitement we all shared in this phenomenal event. Again, thanks to everyone involved. We couldn’t have done it without you!

WTF?! Artist Highlight – BARISONE

A pillar in Portland’s EDM community, Barisone is a humble king serving up a banquet of get down n feel good music. With roots in hip hop and inspirations from across the board, his sets never have a dull moment. They are sexy and playful… they are dirty beautiful… above all, they just straight up G.  With the power of the pied piper Barisone will fill the dance floor and take you on a musical adventure unlike any other. Like being a puppet on strings being played by a master puppeteer it’s impossible not to dance and have fun at his shows. His sets are consistently fresh and surprising. He’ll throw you your favorites then open your ears to things you’ve never heard of, but can’t wait to hear again, while incorporating his own loops, layers, and pure Barisone magic. WTF?! Artist Highlight – PRSN

Brice Lowell, PRSN, Ganjaology

I had the pleasure of rolling down to Lightning in a Bottle this past weekend, and damn… What an event!? As usual, Do Lab just does it right. Nice up to the whole team!

While I had the chance to catch some stellar national/international acts, one of my favorite sets came from the homie Brice Lowell of PDX, aka PRSN. I’ve been hearing more and more from this cat over the past year and his sounds are seriously fire. I came home and immediately dug into his soundcloud to get a better ear on what he’s been putting out. This mix was bumping on repeat from one the steeziest vendor booths at the festival, the shared shop belonging to Portland designer Rags To Muffins and Oakland designer P.E.A.C.E. Fits. I had to bring it to the forefront for all you online listeners.

Check out PRSN’s mixtape entitled Third Person here. Look out for this guy this summer. He’ll be performing at What The Festival!? outside Portland, OR at Wolf Fun Ranch.

Turn up and tune in!

Bass Coast 6 MUTINY – Lineup Revealed!!

The Basscoast Mutiny lineup has been revealed, and as expected, it’s stacked with an impressive array of musical talent. For the past three years the Ganjaology team has adventured north into the Canadian wilderness to share in one of the highest vibes parties this side of the Kootenays… and you better believe we’re gearing up for another round!

Year after year the Bass Coast Project continues to amaze, enliven and inspire. Once again, this year The Bass Coast Girls (organizers Andrea Graham and Liz Thomson) have outdone themselves. Performances for this year’s bush session include Addison Groove, Tribe Called Red, Bogl, Cure, D Bridge, Danny Corn, G Jones, J.F. Killah, Kir Mokem, Mat The Alien, Max Ulis, Natasha Kmeto, Nick Wisdom, Philthkids, Self Evident, Sweater Beats, Tank Gyal, Librarian, and Yan Zombie among others!! We’ve listed music from many of the musicians below.

Listen to the sounds and imagine yourself in the forest, the beats filling your auditory field. Notice how you feel as these frequencies are filtered through your receiving centers. Are you inspired? Does the music make you move, make you bow your head and hum… Do these sounds suggest to you love or lust, laughter or longing? Are you sick with excitement?

Whatever the case, our physicians here at Ganjaology Institute prescribe one fat dose of BC trees combined with all manner of creation from raw to refined (super pun here, please smirk responsibly). Coincidentally you can get all this at Bass Coast. Do your body a favor and get up to Merritt, BC this August for Bass Coast 6 Mutiny!
