Photek – KU:PALM

DnB pioneer, Photek is back in action with his first album released in over 10 years! After a brief escape into other musical realities, Photek resurfaced on the dance scene in 2011 with his release of the Avalanche EP, shortly followed by the Aviator EP. With a grammy nomination in 2012 for his Daft Punk remix on the TRON soundtrack, Photek has set the stage for his smashing new album…

– KU:PALM –

Intelligent and dynamic, KU:PALM is a fine blend of old and new. The album focuses more on sonic frequency and fluidity than genre specific  pattern building. Each track can be connected to the last, creating a well written, interwined album. Though each song stands alone, the album offers a comforting cohesiveness. Blending elegant sound aesthetics with high level composition, KU:PALM leads us on a sonic journey through space and time.

Known best for his futuristic drum and bass sounds of the early to late 90s, UK born Rupert Parkes aka Photek has been at this a long time. Since his inception into the global dance scene in 1992, Photek has produced an impressive array of music including DnB, downtempo, deep house and experimental. Some labels with whom he has worked include Tectonic, Rudeboy, Virgin, Sanctuary, and DnB legend Goldie’s Metalheadz label; along with his own Photek Productions. Now after 20 years in the scene, Photek has revamped and reenergized to bring us an album that is as pleasing to the soul as it is to the ears. This is KU:PALM.

We’ve listed a few tracks to give you a taste of what can be expected from this album, along with Photek’s recent BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix.

Asian Dub Foundation

Hailing from Japan, the Asian Dub Foundation has had its roots firmly planted in the electronica realm for the past 16 years. While their styles range from hip hop to dancehall, their strong lyrics laced over each track makes their sound unmistakable. Through the years they have collected numerous awards and spotlights across the globe, and have performed in nearly every large festival venue in Europe.

Their latest album A History of Now received mixed reviews – much of their more political messages fell flat for their fans, mainly perhaps because so much is expected of this veteran group. The album did prove that no matter what theme or style that inspires them, their sounds have lasted the test of time and are always powerful enough to move and vibe to.

Beats Antique Show at the Newport

You can tell a lot about a band by looking at their audience. As the crowd trickled in early Tuesday night to the Newport in Columbus, the wide array of influences bestowed by Beats Antique could be seen reflected in their followers: festival-goers donning the latest in glowstick technology, leather clad Danzig disciples, aspiring bellydancers, and a substantial amount of 40-somethings of various Indo-European descent.

Much like their audience, the “Animale Mechanique” show put on by Beats Antique was remarkably unique as far electronic music performances go. It stood out from any other acoustic, visual, or dance performance I’ve ever seen, for that matter. The word “eclectic” comes to mind, but I’m not sure it does justice to what i experienced. A combination of acoustic Eastern European instrumentation and 808 drum machines, glitchy samples, and belly dancing would deem this show more worthy of the “Performance Art” category.

The show started out with belly dancer/frontwoman Zoe Jakes doing a dance routine to a minimal bell percussion loop. As her performance moved forward, drummer “Sidecar” Tommy Cappel and multi-instrumentalist David Satori came in, adding dirty drum machine rolls and violin phrases, until finally bringing in the full array of samples and loops along with the more dramatic side of the light show. With the addition of a live drum-kit to the already big-room sound, the atmosphere took on a dramatic, almost movie-trailer feel to it.

As the 2-hour set rolled on, Jakes changed into different elaborate outfits according to the tone of the music, and Satori got more and more experimental with his plethora of instruments in constant flux. At one point, Satori was playing a banjo with a drumstick filtered through a wah-wah pedal while Jakes danced behind a blank projection screen, her silhouette accented by a large headdress and other bulky but elegant accessories. I also heard melodica and trumpet from Satori, and a dueling drum feud between him and drummer Cappel. Other highlights of Jakes’ dance display included a mermaid love song with opening act Lynx, crystal-clad deer antlers, and a giant white linen dress puffed up by a fan (Marilyn Monroe style) with blue polka-dotted lights projected onto it. The audience was constantly receiving new forms of stimuli as the live performance progressed.

The band upped the tempo toward the end of their set in logical fashion, flexing more of their EDM, post-dubstep muscles for the kids. For one of their cinematic finales, they covered BassNectar’s “Voodoo” and brought out the super hype lights to reveal a sea of people jumping in unison. By the end of the show, the band was prancing around in animal masks, along with some of the better dancers in the crowd who were brought up on stage to join. Top it off with confetti canons and you’ve got yourself an awe-inspiring experience.

Below are a few favorites from the group’s latest EP entitled “Contraption Vol.II

The first track is number four off of the  eight track EP and it’s truly a beautiful one. It’s sort of drunken rhythm will have a crowd swaying side to side as if they were an old western saloon hanging out with Tom Waits. The smooth sung vocal harmonies drive the song along as they are accented by perfectly timed strings and raw acoustic guitars. The song’s title “Crooked Muse” should give you a good idea of the song even before listening. You may find yourself singing along by the time the chorus comes along.

The second is actually the next track on the EP and it shows truly what group can do production-wise. The track entitled “Hero” is a perfect mix between the past and the present, the analog and the digital, the live performance and the studio. It opens with beautifully crafted string harmonies that have so much emotion in them that you cant wait for the beat to drop in. As the complex percussion comes in, there is a equal mix of organic sounding drums and chopped audio to give a nice EDM accent. As the song flows through the groups complex arranging style they continue to build up until such an epic synthesized drop with an incredible tremolo synth mixed with the pre-existing instruments. This track is truly a remarkable composition that accurately depicts, as they put, a ‘Hero’.

6 Days ’til Decibel Festival – B. Bravo – Teeko

So there’s two purposes to this post. First off the tune below, which is part of an EP released yesterday, is just downright funky. The perfectly crafted grooves that have the feel of the 70’s but the production quality of today, accurately show the two producers talents and capabilites. The duo hailing from the Bay Area, California have been musicians for quite sometime. Although the two have created quite an electronic feel, they have both been influenced by many jazz and funk artists, which can be heard in their music. Teeko, who has toured from coast to coast, as a DJ and as a Jazz musician has made quite a name for himself today. B. Bravo is nothing short of that himself, starting the label Frite Nite and touring as a DJ and live performer as well.  The EP is available on iTunes as well as directly from the Record Label’s website, Fritenite.com. It’s available in digital and vinyl so go and grab it!

The second part to this post is that B. Bravo will be performing on Sept. 28th, at DECIBEL FESTIVAL!  So you can hear him live on that friday if you’re in the Seattle area!

9 Days ’til Decibel Festival – Halo Refuser

Dynamic instrumentation, multi-genre ear-bending soundscapes, and clever word play characterize the image that this Portland musician has made for himself. Asher Fulero, better known as Halo Refuser is bringing intelligent musicianship to the masses through his incredible array of spirited sounds. Under the name Halo Refuser, which is an anagram of his given name; Fulero is successfully fulfilling his goal of creating an exciting music project that will work for the dance clubs.

In the first two years of this project, Fulero released three alluring EPs which have been enjoyed by music lovers across the globe. Last year he released his first full length album entitled Ambigrammatic which he has produced and sold himself. Among many other exciting releases, Fulero’s single ‘The Lookout’ was featured on Seattle’s Innerflight label as a part of their Left Coast Sampler Vol. 3, released April 2012. If you’re unsure of which events to attend during Decibel this year, Halo Refuser is certainly one to look out for.

13 Days ’til Decibel Festival – Tipper

Just 14 Days ’till Decibel and I’m feeling lucky, twice. Seven is my lucky number… which happens to also be the number of days in a week as well as representing the seven sacred directions. What this means is that in two weeks or two times seven days, the only direction I will be headed is to Decibel Festival.

Today we will have a listen to the world famous engineer of sound, Tipper. Well known to electronic music enthusiasts, UK producer David Tipper is an originator of what we now know as Bass. During the 90s when EDM was still in the womb, Tipper was in the lab experimenting with new and different frequencies never before introduced as music. Finding security in the science of bass, Tipper began his journey into the realm of experimental music performance.

One of the reasons I like Tipper is that when it comes to bringing the bass, this man booms! Around 2000, Like the Jamaican sound system engineers that forged the way for low frequency modulation, Tipper built a mobile sound system. In fact, with the help of friend Richie Warren, he built two. A pair of lucky 1970s black Dodge Chargers were outfitted with hydraulic lifted,  fully powered bass stations. Each consisting of 6×18″ subs along with Funktion One mid/tops speaker units; these babies bounced. They would roll around bumping tunes so loudly that they once received complaints from The Prodigy’s stage manager for disrupting the show by playing too loudly in the parking lot.

Oooops!

Since then, Tipper has produced for, played for, and partaken in just about everyone’s projects. As one of the world’s most advanced audio engineers, he is known for his experimental approach to creating some of the best dance music to ever be heard by earth people.

Here’s some music to keep your ears occupied until the next two weeks are up and my luck’s run out. Once that happens, I guess I will have to give in and get my tickets to Decibel Festival. I’ve been hoping to get some media passes so I can spend my money on buying music instead.

My fingers are crossed. All seven on each hand.

Banditz and Self Help – Spine Waves EP

It is with much pleasure that I proudly announce the release of Ganjaology’s first EP, entitled…

Spine Waves EP

Featuring Ohio’s own dance floor killa – DJ Self Help – along with Orlando’s hottest young dubstep duo – Banditz – this release is sure to put some energy in your spine. Transcending genre labels, the Spine Waves EP is a unique blend of beautifully crafted electronica and bass. The project involved the development of two songs from both production teams which were then traded and remixed. This exciting platform for creation has resulted in a release that is fresh, fun and full of energy. Banditz bring the heavier, bass driven, break your back energy; while Self Help brings the lighter, uplifting, bounce ‘tuh dis vibe. Together the Spine Waves EP is a testament to the magnificent power of co-creation.

The six track EP is available for digital download from the Ganjaology Bandcamp, here. All the funds will be put back into the Ganjaology Project so that we can continue providing you with the best music we can get our hands on. Please help us to do what we love most, creating a platform for CREATIVITY, POSITIVITY, and BASS MUSIC. We appreciate the support!

And now… SPINE WAVE!

PS. When I listen to this album, I get the sense that there is electricity literally flowing through my spine. My face swells, my hands tingle, and my feet get numb. If you’ve had a similar experience with this or any other music, you might be experiencing what is called Kundalini energy. It is the energy that flows up your spine from your base or root chakra. Often this is the sensation we get when something “vibes” with us. If you think you feel me, do some research. Tap into that power. It lives within all of us. Open the door. Expand your mind. Experience Spine Waves.

Ableminds – Faces Album

If any of you Ganjaology goers, are into Hip-Hop, Funk, Jazz, or Electronic, you should check these guys out. The Denver based Electronic trio go by Ableminds. They take the very over saturated electronic world and put a bit of an organic flavor to the mix. With Guitarist Jordan Linit and Bassist Charlie Mertens on the production side combined with the raw sounds of Drummer Greg Horn, the three create a very unique sound that will appeal to many. I wanted to show you guys three songs off of their debut full length album.

The first one is called “September 2nd”. If some one asked me what that day fealt like, I would tell them to listen to this song. The funky guitar riffs mixed with the arpeggiating synth get me honestly. If you take those two and mix in a groovy electronic drum pattern and an emotional melody, well… you would get this song.

The name is spot on for the second song as well. The track entitled “6 In The Morning” truly puts me at time period in my head. Its soothing enough to be an early morning song, as in playing this song on your morning commute, or playing it at 6AM after a crazy night of partying. Either way seems to work nicely in my head. Try it out. I bet you’ll dig it.

Lastly, is a more Hip-Hop based electronic track “Let It All Go”. It combines the flows of LA based rapper Deploi and the beatiful sampling of these Ableminds. Such nice vibes on this track, with a very organic approach to glitch hop.

Loving these sounds, I can’t wait to hear more.

Dynamic – Up in my World

Here is to another beat stuck on repeat.  If you love those rapid hat hits, ambient bass, or funk spliced jungle-jazz then heres the sound for your ears.  Dynamic   establishes this one with liquifying dnb, pouring the foundation for a vocal sample so timeless and nostalgic it dances in and out with the smoothest of class.  Recently released under the worldwide label, Rubik Recordings, “Up in my World” is a must for any aural adventure.  Let the music set your free.

Check out more Dynamic here!

SaQi – Heart’s Castle EP

Fusing the speakers with cultural rhythms and instruments, SaQi brings the danceable beat around with engaging tempos.  SaQi, a composer, producer, and trumpet player emerging from Portland flourishes in bohemian style on GYPSYPOP RECORDS!  On his 6 track EP, “Heart’s Castle,” SaQi incorporates talented vocalists into a wide variety of intimate instruments blending with stylistic synths.  The combination of sexy brass,  unique vocals, buzzing distortion, and wobble fusion keeps your ears glued to his sounds and will surely get your body in a deep groovin focus.  Support the artist on saqi.bandcamp.com and reward yourself with his tracks of treasure.

Baauer – “DumDum”

Man the Brooklyn based producer, Baauer is killing it. He’s been doing work for Mad Decent recently with his electronic infused trap music. This tune is forthcoming on LuckyMe Records and it’s just too big to not share. The 808 kick is so heavy I swear it could bring down the house, literally and figuratively. Get out your pyrex pot and turn up your sub, this one is sick.

Biome – “Havana”

J. Hanna here.

This here’s a big one from UK producer Biome. The tune “Havana” is set to release along side “No Tomorrow” as well as two edits of the B side. It seems as though the actual date is not set yet but it is said to be “Coming Soon” on the label’s soundcloud. Can’t wait for this one to come out, I’m sure to bag it that day. Big up Biome for another deep banger!

R.A.D. – “Make It Funky”

Can’t believe this producer doesn’t have more people following his soundcloud. I don’t have any info on this artist, and can’t really find any on the web other than that they’re from the UK. Go follow them here if you feel inclined, and show support for this awesome musician. Check out this sick wobbly tune they just put out last month, what a nice pattern!

Soap Dodgers – “Ill Minded”

Lovin’ this one lately, which makes it that much harder to wait for the release. As for now I can’t find a date on this banger, but as soon as it is announced I’ll be sure to update the post. The strings in the beginning are so dark but the melody is so pleasing to the ear, honestly it’s my favorite part of the song. It’s too bad we have to wait for such a great one, but for now check the English duo’s tune “Ill Minded”, it’s a BIG WAN.

Bloodfire & Buchan – “Bump That”

The english and the belgians make great dubstep together, here is one example. This swung stinkin skanker is heavy and will get you moving your feet. Check it out and blast it loud. Happy friday!

http://soundcloud.com/bloodfire/buchan-bloodfire-bump-that

Skream – “Mood2Fuck”

Here’s a Skream track that I’ve never heard, I thought I’d share it with you all. It’s not quite as loud as some of his other tunes, but its still maintains the Skream heaviness. Apparently this tune been around for a while, so if you’ve heard it, why not take another listen. If you haven’t… why not take a listen. If you haven’t heard of skream, check out more of his tracks here.

Kryptic Minds – Badman VIP

Apparently this stinkah has been around for a while, but this tune is Large. The only version you can find of this dubplate is the one below, with Youngsta talking over it. This one was too big not to post. Check it. Big up Kryptic Minds.
